ABOUT GREATER ACCRA

The Greater Accra Region is the most urbanized region in Ghana with 87.4% of its total population living in urban centers. The capital city of Greater Accra Region is Accra which is at the same time the capital city of Ghana.

The Greater Accra Region occupies a total land surface of 3,245 square kilometres. This is 1.4 per cent of the total land area of Ghana. It is the second most populated region with a population of 5,455,692 in 2021 according to the Ghana Statistical Service, accounting for 17.71 percent of Ghana’s total population.

It hosts the main banks and department stores, as well as the Ministries, where Ghana’s government administration is concentrated. Economic activities in Accra include the financial and commercial sectors, fishing, and the manufacture of processed food, lumber, plywood, textiles, clothing, and chemicals. Tourism is becoming a thriving source of business for those in arts and crafts, historical sites, and local travel and tour agents.

Accra is a busy city so you will be sure to find every type of cuisine from other African countries, and continental (Asian, European, American) dishes. You will always be spoilt for choice for finding Ghanaian cuisine like banku, jollof, fufu, kenkey, waakye, tuo zaafi and the like.

Ghana’s most populous city boasts glittering beaches, monumental buildings, museums, libraries, galleries, traditional markets and lively nightlife.

  • Labadi Beach: Labadi Beach or more properly known as La Pleasure Beach is one of the busiest beach on Ghana’s coast. It is one of Accra’s beaches and is maintained by the local hotels. On holidays and weekends there are often performances of reggae, hiplife, playback, and cultural drumming and dancing.
  • Osu Castle: Osu Castle is a castle located in Osu, Accra, Ghana. The first substantial fort was built by Denmark-Norway in the 1660s. it has been the seat of government in Ghana in the past. It also serves as the place where the late president of Ghana John Atta Mills is buried; in a bird sanctuary, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum: The memorial complex was dedicated in 1992. It is situated on the site of the former British colonial polo grounds in Accra. The mausoleum, designed by Don Arthur, houses the bodies of Kwame Nkrumah and his wife Fathia.

ARRIVAL AND PARKING

Our campus (with google location 5.69967, -0.25919) sits on sides of one of the buzzing green-hills of the Kwabenya Hills community, which is a Kilometre off the University Junction (opposite Rasta Bar) along Kwabenya – ACP Overpass.

The University Junction is a 1.5 Kilometres to/from Kwabenya and 2 kilometres to/from Pokuase-ACP Junction. Anyone from Accra Central Business District via Circle via Achimota or Kasoa-Awoshie, Nsawam-Amasaman can use the Pokuase-ACP link towards the University Junction.

Visitors from Adenta-Madina, Dome, Tema can use the Atomic-Kwabenya link to the University Junction.
